Hiriketiya Surfing Beach – Dikwella, Sri Lanka. Also know as Hiriketiya bay or Hiri was hidden and sleepy till backpackers found it 4,5 years back. Located in southern coast of the island, just next door to Dickwella beach (one hour drive from Matara). Without a doubt this is one of the premiere beach of down south. The road is not of a good quality and the sign boards are yet to be placed. But never miss to visit this hidden gem.
This bay is guarded by a rocky mountain. The horse shoe shape of the bay keeps winds away making swimming and surfing conditions safe all year round. With waves rolling in almost all the year Hiriketiya beach matches the requirements of all grade of surfers, even to learn to ride the waves or to take your surfing experience to a next level. This beach is simply magical. Surfers from all around the world gather here to practice surfing. You can relax and have a greater time watching the surfers in action and enjoy the good vibes.
Along the beach there are fine establishments to eat and hang. Most deck chairs are free of charge as long as you buy a small snack or a drink from the shops that own them. There is a yellow mini bus (Raju’ s bus) permanently parked by the beach and has converted in to a mini restaurant to offer you fresh juices and other meals.
We had a delicious breakfast and lunch from “the grovelanka” restaurant, next to Hiriketiya beach. This restaurant is famous among all guests/ surfers for the best breakfast. The staff was very friendly and provided us with a personalized service. Foods were more westernized and mouthwatering.
You can hire boards from beach edge for about LKR300.But its an absolute bargain. We’d suggest surfing just after the sunrise and this beach has softest golden sand. If you are a learner you should not worry as there are surf schools along the beach. The surfing experience here is truly amazing and you can see turtles beneath the water. The breaking of waves create different patterns in water which please eyes even more. The water is crystal clear with an exceptional gradient of colors.
If you are in down south, you should add this jungle paradise to your itinerary.
